Ever tasted Purgatory? Here in Gradoli you can: enjoy the festival!
Gradoli rises above the lake Bolsena’s shores, in Central Italy. One of the most important festival is the so-called Pranzo del Purgatorio (Purgatory Lunch). Purgatory Lunch is a sort of feast, during which the Purgatory confreres celebrate the Ash Day.
The lunch, prepared within the premises of the Cantina Sociale di Gradoli, is kept on Ash Wednesday.
The menu is always the same: white Purgatory beans seasoned with Gradoli extra virgin olive oil, soup, rice and tench soup whose recipe is ancient and secret; pike fried with tomato sauce, boiled cod with olive oil and parsley and an apple.
And tradition says that all guests must provide themselves with plates, cutlery, bread and drinks.
